FAQ

  • It's a BIG DEAL! Fascia is everywhere in the body. And we NEED to pay attention to it. Fascia, like us, needs to stay hydrated. HOW? With water & motion. So Fascia Health & Hygiene is, you guessed it...EXERCISE! Join the Building Fluid Strength classes and feel the difference!

Fascia operates like a hydraulic system. It responds to tension and release. Think of a kitchen sponge. When we squeeze or wring it out, water comes out of it's holes. When we release that tension, water gets sucked up into those holes. That's how it re-hydrates. Fascia needs intentional tension to pump the hydraulics of it's design in order to survive. We never want it to dry out, or run out of moisture, and get brittle. That creates issues in our tissues. Therefore, Motion is the lotion!

Fascia is connective tissue. It's the body's largest organ. It's superficial (on the surface) and deep inside the body (around organs, veins, bones). It's what holds us together. It's a structural component in our bodies, similar to components of architecture in buildings. It's firm and sinew-like in some places (IT Band), yet fluid in others. Over time, fascia has literally been thrown aside and disregarded. It was viewed as waste, or the 'gunky' gooey stuff that got in the way of surgeons learning the insides of the body. It has recently been gaining appreciation as one of our most important components to our physical wellbeing. Staying curious about fascia and it's many function has affected us in medical health, as well as mental health. For many individuals who have suffered from mysterious or certain symptoms, the fascia is usually at play, yet disregarded. Which makes perfect sense if we accept the fact that the medical field has not acknowledged fascia as part of our organ system to care for, treat and test. Fascia responds closely related to water, and hydration of the body. It is a communicator between brain & body. It is a transportation system of nutrients. It is enhanced by water. It can handle the electricity passing through the nerves, conducting messages for our somato-sensory system. It's a big deal. The body being 70% +/- water, if we disregard fascia health, we may be missing some basic fundamental hydraulic bodily operations that can effect the body as a whole. Disregarding fascia doesn't work. It doesn't go away. We do not want it to go away, yet we need to work with it. It's the relationship pathway to having a body.

  • Developed by Dr. Gary Gray, founder of the Gray Institute for Applied Functional Science, it is movement that is true to the way the body is designed, how it moves, and functions. Functional Movement is authentic to the task, sport or goal. It incorporates the unique characteristics each body innately has, and recognizes no bodies are the same, nor should they be treated the same. Functional Movement offers the worlds best care for body longevity, performance, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

  • I call it the 'AHHH Factor'...it's that soothing feeling that happens when you get in water, warm water. It's soothing. This feeling is literally the response from each and every nerve ending that gets stimulated when submerged. That effect on the nervous system helps to turn OFF our sympathetic nervous system, which is our pain and stress response, and helps turn up the volume on our parasympathetic nervous system. This results in a very pleasant reduction of pain, which makes moving in the water LESS painful than moving on land. If you're curious or thinking this sounds like a good idea, got for it! Get in touch with me today! Wait no longer to enjoy the feeling of moving in water.

  • SAFETY first! Have your chair, counter-top or wall within arms reach, or closer during exercise. You are in the right place! This is a VERY important and I’m SO glad you are deciding to work on it! Be patient and keep up the good work! Every Building Fluid Strength class works on balance & agility in a SAFE way with modifications given. I strongly recommend aquatic work for balance. The water is a safe place to get ‘wobbly’. The water is constantly moving which creates a unique balance challenge. When we can challenge balance safely, we build strong neural pathways that will be there, ready to fire when we need to react quickly. Reach out and let’s have a conversation about where to start!

  • This is a BIG topic and it needs proper modifications according to YOUR unique knees. Let’s talk! Water therapy may be the BEST place to address your body’s wellness goals without feeling pain in the knees. We can improve knee function in the water while giving the rest of your body a workout! Please get in touch to contact me. Every Building Fluid Strength class offers modification information on protecting your knees during land-based exercise!

  • You are not alone! It is SO important that you find what motions work for you, and what does not. Always be on the safe side and use caution when engaging with land-based exercise. How you take care of your back all depends on how your back behaves during and after the exercise. It depends on what you know about your back and what you’ve been told about your back. Aquatic Sessions may be something to consider. Let’s have quick conversation to figure out the best way to proceed. Check out the Modifications section for some general information.

  • Only work within your safe range of motion. DO NOT push past ‘bad pain’. Respect what your body is trying to tell you. It’s tricky and it involves getting cooperation from other areas in the upper body. Hands-on Soft Tissue therapy can be excellent for this especially in the shoulders. Performed in the water, soft tissue therapy is much more effective than land-based soft tissue therapy. Please get in touch to find out more about helping your shoulders. If you choose to proceed on land, please visit the Modifications Section for more info about this, and feel free to get in touch with further questions.

  • Both environments help with bone density. Recent research, within the last 20 years, has shown that bone density can improve in the aquatic environment. Up until recently, medical knowledge said bone density needs gravity to increase as it does in our early years as an infant transitioning to vertical, two-legged lifestyle. When fascia research came into account, another story for another time!, we saw that it wasn't necessarily gravity alone that effects bone density. In addition, it was the push and pull on bones through fascia encapsulating the muscles that actually made the bones denser. Aquatic fitness alone, especially with added resistance can help increase bone density in an already upright individual.

  • These are Kathleen's gravity-based Fascia Focused Functional movement classes offered LIVE and On-Demand. Every class focuses on ADL's, balance, strength and stamina. You are the Athlete in this event called LIFE! Join us today and start training for the biggest event of your lifetime! Interested in private training in water or land? Contact me to find out more!

  • ADL is an acronym for Activities of Daily Living. I like to call them Athletics of Daily Life, and YOU are the Athlete of DailyLiving. Life is the event that you, me, we are ALL training for! Exercises to help with ADL's tend to 'mirror' the action in daily life. Life is messy. So training for the messiness of life, should safely 'mirror' some of that mess. It will be challenging. Training in a SAFE way, with success, as we encounter those challenges, helps build neural pathways to new movement potential. Ready to get better in your Athletics of Daily Life? Let's go! Get in touch TODAY and we'll get you started!

  • They are lines of communication within our brains and body. There are many neural pathways through our brain and body delivering specific messages from certain areas to other areas. They are the communication pathways in the brain. When we move our bodies, there are many signals or messages getting delivered to our brain via these neural pathways. Keeping these lines of communication healthy and flowing encourages brains neuro-plasticity, which it's ability to stay healthy by learning new things.

  • Your comfort and safety will always be honored. Never challenged. One of my favorite things to do is teach adults and children to feel safe in and around water. For my information, please get in touch. I would be honored to help you return to water with a positive new experience.

  • Do what you can. If stamina is one of your wellness goal, let’s talk! The aquatic environment may be perfect for you!

If you’re a Pathways member, choose the 30 Minute option! Remember to press PAUSE anytime you need a rest and come back when you’re ready. Each class has a general, full-body warm-up in the beginning 15-20 minutes. Doing the warm-up only, is better than nothing. It gives you a nice stretch either before or after activity. Plus, it gives you an idea of where your body is right now.

  • Chair: This is a simple hard-back chair. Please DO NOT use a chair with wheels!!! I repeat, a NON-Moving chair. It’s not worth the mishap that might become an injury in that moment of convenience when you reach for that swivel desk chair. Take the time to have the proper chair. Try to find one without armrests.

Weights: during lock-down, we were using everything from a soup can to a box of Kleenex, to the throw pillow as objects. And occasionally I would request that it ‘not’ be the pet cat! I recommend investing in a simple set of hand barbells in a variety of weights. An alternative is an emptied out gallon or half-gallon milk jug with a handle, re-filled with water is a great with a handle. One gallon is 8 pounds. The half-gallon is 4. Be sure to super glue the lid to avoid any over-head leaks! Your own everyday water bottle is also a great object to hold for training.

Wall for Push-ups: I recommend a smooth wall free of wall-hangings. The frame of a door way is also a great structure to place your hands on.

  • You DO NOT need to know how to swim in order to engage in Aquatic exercise. This is NOT like swimming. We will always design your

session according to your relationship with water and safety. We can do alot with your progression while ALWAYS honoring your safety in the water. You will be in a vertical, up-right body position and your head, nose, eyes and ears stay above the water level.

On occasion, and only based on your comfort in the water, we may try a suspended body position, deep end suspension, or horizontal suspension. These are all with the use of safe buoyancy equipment appropriate for the intended outcome.

  • Yes. If you wear hearing aides, or contact lenses, it is advised to have these removed upon entering the water, unless they are safe for use around water.

Why Water, Land & Combo

Environments of Transformation

  • Water

Why Water? - Simply by being in water, pain is decreased. Mobility & flexibility increase all while providing support & balance. If moving on land is painful, limited, or not an optionWATER is the place to be! Simple Activities of Daily Life can be safely practiced in the water. Any progress gained in water, transfers to land function. Neural pathways are stimulated as a result of being able to safely move more, without pain. This ultimately increases neuro-plasticity. Improve balance, maintain or increase cardiovascular endurance all while keeping the joints of the body safe. Water give us unique advantages to help us be better at moving in gravity.

  • Land

Why Land? - This where we live. Let’s face it, we all want to move the best we can, for as long as we can. At the minimum, performing basic physical Activities of Daily Life might be at the top of your list. Maybe you want to run your first 5K, or go to Costco without being exhausted. Or play 18 holes of golf, be ready for spring break with the Grandkids or compete in your record-breaking Division 2 Collegiate Decathlon. In all these cases, Functional Movement Training on land must be authentic to the physical goal while preventing injury and enhancing performance excellence.

  • Combo

Why Combo? - This approach leverages the best techniques from both modalities into one journey to achieve performance excellence. Using both land and water can be ideal if you are limited in gravity for any reason including a serious injury, pain or situation requiring more recovery. Maybe you’d like to train with more ease on your joints. If this is you, then we choose the environment combo best suited to your individual needs and progress from there.

At the Gray Institute for Applied Functional Science, any graduated GIFT (Gray Institute for Functional Transformation) Fellow has the opportunity to give a talk to the current class of GIFT Fellows. It’s like a TED talk, yet we call them TWD (Truths Worth Doing). We do these talks to learn from each other’s expertise. Ultimately, it’s a generous way we share information & passions while encouraging our fellow Functional Movement Fellows to try something new. The talks take place LIVE at the GIFT gatherings, in Adrian, Michigan, attended by an audience of the current GIFT Fellows along with the staff & faculty of the Gray Institute. ENJOY!

“Knowing Kathleen for several years I have found her to have a wealth of knowledge about body muscles and how they perform. She uses this knowledge in a friendly happy way so I developed strength and balance.  She helped me successfully recover from a heart bypass and a broken hip.  I will forever be grateful to her. ”
